Market Harborough is a market town in Leicestershire and the area used to be part of the Rockingham Forest, a former royal hunting ground in medieval times used by monarchs starting with William I. It has a history stretching back to Saxon times and was prominent in the English Civil War as the headquarters of the King's Army.

There was a considerable increase in building homes with bricks in the 18th century – they were frequently previously built of mud, thatch and timber – and around this time the town became a staging point for coach travel between London, the Midlands and the North West. Industry considerably developed in the 19th century and the arrival of the Leicester-Rugby railway in 1840 (even though the town itself didn't get a station until 1850) spelt the end of the coach travel industry. The centre of the town has been classified as a conservation area.

Landmarks and attractions include the Old Grammar School, built in 1614, St Dionysius Church, which dates back to the 14th century, The Old Town Hall, The Old Fire Station, Harborough Museum, the Foxton Locks (a sequence of 10 canal locks in two staircases each of 5 locks) and Gartree Prison.
