Discount mortgages normally involve the lender imposing an interest rate charge on the loan which is at a discount to the lender's standard variable rate (SVR). The discount is normally fixed for a period (typically 2 or 3 years).

You benefit as a mortgagor by the discount rate being cheaper than the SVR and if the SVR in turn is cut, then you pay even less each month. However you also have to allow for the possibility of the SVR rising, in which case you'll pay more. You may also be subject to charges if you wish to leave before the end of the discount period.


Brentwood is the principal town of Brentwood Borough in Essex, located 20 miles east north-east of Central London. It is a suburban town with a rural feel. Open spaces include Shenfield Common.

The Cathedral Church of St Mary and St Helen, built in 1861 in a Gothic style, is a prominent landmark.

An excellent and curious diversion to make in the locale is a visit to Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker (in Kelvedon Hall Lane) - it's not so secret now, but it's a great reminder of how real the fear of nuclear war was a few decades ago. It's pretty big and pretty basic in terms of comfort!
