Crofton Park only became a built up area when the railway arrived in 1892, prior to that the main buildings were Brockley Farm, Brockley Hall and the Brockley Jack pub. The area rapidly expanded between then and the 1st world war with many terrace houses built (late Victorian and Edwardian) and the local authority built flats and houses. The Edwardian public library was built in 1905 and the Crofton Park Picture Palace was built in 1913 (now the Rivoli Ballroom).

The area was bombed heavily during the 2nd world war, particularly to the north of Crofton Park Station; new houses were built in that area from the 1950s to the 1970s: mainly semi-detached and terrace houses.
