Byfleet is an inland island and a village which has medieval origins. It expanded particularly when Brooklands motor circuit opened in 1907 and this caused a large housing estate to be developed between Chertsey Road and Oyster Lane during World War 1. The estate was sold off but the houses have survived.

St Mary's Church dates to the 14th century and Byfleet Manor was built in 1686.
